3 Ways To Make Your Own Sprinkles

We’ve been getting SO many requests lately to try out some DIY sprinkles that we went a little overboard and made not only one but THREE different versions! I can’t ever seem to find the right colors or shapes of sprinkles when I’m baking to match the finished image I have in my head. So after trying my hand at these DIY versions, I now know that the possibilities are endless and you can make almost any kind of sprinkles that you can dream up (even 3D spirals)! There are some cupcakes somewhere that need homemade rainbow sprinkles, so let’s get making!

For the stars and hearts:

Colored fondant

Shaped punches (here)

Rolling pin

For the spirals:

Colored fondant

Small skewer

Sharp knife

For the rainbow sprinkles:

3 tablespoons meringue powder

4 cups powdered sugar

5 tablespoons water

Piping bags

Gel food coloring

Parchment paper

For the stars and hearts:

1. Roll out the fondant with a rolling pin.

2. Use your punches to cut shapes in the fondant. Set the shapes aside and allow them to harden overnight.

For the spirals:

1. Roll out the fondant with a rolling pin.

2. Cut rectangles out of the fondant.

3. Wrap the fondant around a skewer in a spiral shape and allow it to dry slightly before removing from the skewer.

4. Remove the spirals from the skewer and set aside. Let dry overnight to harden.

For the rainbow sprinkles:

1. Mix the meringue powder, powdered sugar, and water together.

2. Split the icing into 6 different bowls and color each of them a different color with gel food coloring.

3. Put each of the colors into a piping bag and cut off the tip of the bag.

4. On a sheet of parchment paper, pipe straight lines in each color. Allow to dry completely.

5. Once the piped lines are dried, crush them up with your hands until they are in smaller pieces and resemble regular sprinkles.

Now big question is: what are you going to put your homemade sprinkles on?! I’m making some donuts today that will definitely be getting some of these DIY rainbow sprinkles on top!
