10 Minute DIY: Plastic Food String Lights

Now that warmer nights are here, it’s time to bust out the string lights for all of your outdoor parties. And if you’ve been following along here for a while, you might know we don’t always go the traditional route with everything (ha!), so we’re showing you how to revamp those string lights to make plastic FOOD string lights. Believe it or not, these are made with kid’s play toys, so they’re super quick to DIY and they are cheap! I don’t know about you, but I’m so ready to make an entire set of these with just donuts and ice cream. Bring on the (fake) junk food! Ha!

1. Take your plastic food, and using a small drill bit, create a pilot hole where you want the light bulb to go.

2. Use a drill bit the size of the string lights you are using to make the hole in the plastic food larger.

3. Put super glue around the light and attach it to the hole in the plastic food. Allow to dry completely.

4. Complete these steps until all of the lights have been covered with the food.

Are you ready to make your home decor a little cuter?! You can use any plastic kids toys to cover your string lights too, so the possibilities are really endless! Imagine a toy phone set of string lights. How fun!

  1. Oh, how I'd love to do this for my patio. I'm trying to justify how I could do this project now – in spite of the fact that we're in the middle of renovations; I think my husband would flip though, so I'll have to bookmark and hope I can get the plastic food later on. I'm getting on in years, but this makes me feel like a kid again! Great project, y'all!
