GUYS! Have you ever had/heard of black and white cookies?! Yeah, they’re the cookie that was mentioned on Seinfeld a couple of times! I’d never had one of these babies before moving to New York, but now I can’t get enough of ’em! They’re a soft, sponge-cake-like shortbread that is iced on one half with vanilla frosting and on the other half with chocolate frosting. B&W cookies are basically a New York staple (you can pretty much find them in any deli), but with so many of these heavenly cookies roaming around the city, how can we find the BEST of the BEST you say?! Welllll, it’s time for another Aww Sam NYC Tour and today we’re going to find out which cookies CRUMBle under the competition!! (That pun was practically asking for it)!
We went to five different bakeries: Glaser Bake Shop, Amy’s Bread, Willam Greenberg Dessert, Le Gourmet Manhattan, and Donut Pub to taste test and tally up the scores for each cookie. Let’s get onto the results!
Which cookie looks the best to you so far? Even though it’s not exactly black and white, I’m totally in love with this cookie from William Greenberg Desserts. Guys, they sell a pink and white cookie! I’ve never seen a pink and white before!!! The cookie ranking starts below so don’t miss out!
Let’s get down to business. The categories we were looking for during the cookie tasting were: Most Cake-Like, Most Cookie-Like, Best Frosting, Freshest, Worst Frosting, the Best Bang for Your Buck, Softest, and the Overall Winner. To keep a constant during the voting, we each took two bites of each cookie, one on the white side and one on the black side. They were all really good (or maybe we just love cookies) so it was really tough to pick a winner, but here are the results!
Most Cake-Like – Glaser Bake Shop
Most Cookie-Like – Amy’s Bread
Best Frosting – Glaser Bake Shop
Worst Frosting – Donut Pub
Softest – Le Gourmet Manhattan
Freshest – William Greenberg Dessert
Best Bang for Your Buck – Donut Pub
Overall Winner – Glaser Bake Shop
We agreed that Glaser Bake Shop was the overall winner, and from what I’ve heard, so does the rest of NYC too! You can see from the photos that this cookie had almost cake-like frosting instead of icing, and it was AMAZING. It was also the most cake-like in consistency, so maybe we just like our cookies more like little cakes, but there’s definitely a reason Glaser is considered best B&W cookie by more folks than just the ones here at Aww Sam! So the next time you’re in NYC, make sure to grab one of these cookies staple in city-living!
