Mini Donut Hamburgers for 4th of July

Let’s all take a collective moment to brace ourselves for the cuteness of miniature food and drinks. We all know mini donuts are possibly the most adorable things ever, and I’m totally a sucker for using them whenever and wherever I can (here and here). And let’s not forget they’re super delicious too! It was only fitting then that I do some sort of donut tutorial for 4th of July, and the mini hamburger donut was born! I posted a photo of a donut hamburger and fries I had made on Instagram a while back and they were a huge hit, so I’m excited to finally show you exactly how to make them. (And plus, there are mini pitchers of strawberry milk too!)

Since moving to New York, our 4th of July celebrations have been pretty generic with a couple of sparklers and grilled food. In the past, I’ve never had time to make anything special, and we usually forget what day it is exactly until we seeing people buying red, white, and blue at the store. This year, though, I’ll definitely be making these mini donut hamburgers to go along with our normal hamburgers! I mean, we can’t have an Aww Sam 4th of July without donuts being involved somehow! ?

– Mini donut pan (I used this one)
– Poppy seeds
– Yellow fondant for cheese
– Pink or red frosting for onions or tomatoes
– Shredded coconut
– Green food coloring
– Sprinkles (of course!)

For vanilla baked donuts:

– 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
– 1/2 cup dark brown sugar
– 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
– 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
– 1 dash nutmeg
– 1 egg
– 3 tablespoons butter (melted)
– 1/4 cup milk
– 2/3 cups plain greek yogurt
– 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

For chocolate baked donuts (the hamburger patty):

– 5 tablespoons butter (melted)
– 1 egg
– 1/2 cup milk
– 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
– 1/2 cup sugar
– 2 teaspoons baking powder
– Pinch of salt
– 1 cup all purpose flour
– 1/2 cup cocoa powder

For both donuts:

1. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Mix all wet ingredients and all dry ingredients in a separate bowl. Slowly whisk the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients and pour halfway into the donut pan.

3. Bake for 7 minutes and allow to fully cool. Once cooled, cut all donuts in half. You will be using the top and bottom of the vanilla donuts for the top and bottom hamburger buns, and the tops of the chocolate donuts for the hamburger patty.

4. Wet the tops of the vanilla donuts with a few drops of water and put some poppy seeds and rainbow sprinkles on top.

5. In a small bowl, combine a few drops of the green food coloring and the shredded coconut to look like lettuce.

6. Roll out the yellow fondant and cut into “cheese” slices.

7. Assemble your mini donut hamburgers and enjoy!

My guy made a little pitcher of strawberry milk to go with the donuts and I almost died of cuteness when I saw the result. It’s like the most adorable shot of milk ever! You could even do mini pitchers of red or blue soda instead to go along with the 4th of July theme!

So what are you waiting for? These are so easy to make and even better to eat. They’re definitely one of my favorite things I’ve made, and I’ve decorated a lot of donuts! Oh, and if any of you are wondering, Party City has an amazing selection of mini plates, bowls, cups, and utensils. I went a little crazy myself after seeing the miniature forks and knives. Let’s just say, I had one of those moments where I buy a lot of props hoping that I use them someday. Ha!

Have lots of fun making this one, and I hope they’re a huge hit at all of your 4th of July parties!
